Spotlight: Vancouver

DSC00408 Vancouver is certainly one of my favourite cities. It has so much to offer the visitor: the ocean and the beaches, the stunning snow-capped mountains at its doorstep, the immense harbour, gorgeous parks, great shopping, a multitude of excellent restaurants… there’s so much to see and do in this fantastic city both in the summer as well as in the winter. 2010 will be a big year for Vancouver as it hosts the Winter Olympics for the first time. The city is certainly a great winter destination due to the proximity of world-class ski resorts – the Grouse Mountain and Cypress Bowl slopes are within a stone’s throw of downtown Vancouver while Whistler/Blackcomb is a scenic two-hour drive away. On a clear night, the floodlit slopes of Grouse Mountain and Cypress Bowl sparkle like magical floating sleighs when viewed from the city.

IMG_1022 The city is just as breathtaking in the summer when the seawall comes to life with thousands of joggers, skateboarders and strollers. There’s nothing I love more in this city than spending a lazy afternoon at a terrace overlooking False Creek and watching people and boats whizz by. Or renting a bike and cycling around the seawall and Stanley Park. There are also many beaches to visit: English Bay, Kitsilano, Jericho, Spanish Bank, Wreck Beach, to name a few. Oh yes, and the seafood here is absolutely mouth-watering. Head for a good Japanese restaurant and order tuna sashimi – there’s a good chance it’ll be one of the best (melt-in-your-mouth) tuna you’ll ever have!
