From Amsterdam to Birmingham, eh? Both cities have more canals than Venice (a claim that always seemed to me to be missing the point somewhat).

It's 4 hours by high-speed train from London to Amsterdam (via Brussels). http://www.eurostar.com/UK/uk/leisure/latest_deals/london_amsterdam.jsp Plus another 2 hours to get to Birmingham. So I agree it's not practical for a weekend trip. It would still be my choice for a longer trip, but it's horses for courses.

Hi Caitlin,
Thanks for your comment and the train tip. I'm glad bmibaby took care of my ticket - it would've been a long trip with the train from Amsterdam! :-) But for travellers from London, yes, it makes sense to take the train. The train I took from the airport to the city centre originated from London. It's not a very big distance so the train from London makes more sense.

Cheers,
Keith

I've enjoyed Birmingham every time I've gone there, though honestly I wouldn't rate it as a must see. I particularly liked the silver district - a lot of history plus contemporary jewellery designers too. I'm sure you'll have fun.

I know you have a freebie from airline bmibaby and I'm not criticising that, but your readers may also want to know that you can get from London to Birmingham on the train in less than two hours for around £20 return (depending on the type of ticket and when you travel). As it's in central England, Birmingham is pretty well connected by train to most of the UK. I know many travellers try to minimise air travel so I thought that might be useful.
