Both cities have more canals than Venice (a claim that always seemed to me to be missing the point somewhat). It's 4 hours by high-speed train from London to Amsterdam (via Brussels). http://www.eurostar.com/UK/uk/leisure/latest_deals/london_amsterdam.jsp Plus another 2 hours to get to Birmingham. So I agree it's not practical for a weekend trip. It would still be my choice for a longer trip, but it's horses for courses. From Amsterdam to Birmingham, eh? I'm glad bmibaby took care of my ticket - it would've been a long trip with the train from Amsterdam! :-) But for travellers from London, yes, it makes sense to take the train.
