Experiencing Sabah

Sunset Kota KinabaluSabah is a Malaysian state that occupies the northern corner of the vast island of Borneo. Often referred to as “The Land Below the Wind” (due to its location just below the typhoon belt), Sabah is an ecological gem. Its long coastline harbours some of the richest marine life in the world, not to mention some of the most pristine beaches imaginable, while its hinterland is home to the world’s oldest rainforest as well as the region’s highest mountain, the iconic Mount Kinabalu.

I’ve been to Sabah many times before and I love the islands, the stunning natural scenery, the friendly people, the many local festivals and the incredible food. There’s really so much to see and do in this magnificent corner of Borneo: divers the world over dream of the scuba-diving sites at Sipadan, Mabul and Layang-Layang islands; the amateur mountain climber can trek to the top of Mount Kinabalu (it really is one of the easiest mountains to climb) whilst enjoying the great diversity of the flora (such as the world’s largest flower: the Rafflesia) and fauna along the way; visitors can watch turtles lay their eggs at the Turtle Islands Park 365 days a year; there’s whitewater rafting, jungle-trekking, river safaris, intriguing festivals, and when you’re done with all that, you can sit down with a cold drink and watch a brilliant sunset, then tuck into a mouthwatering seafood dinner! :-)

My itinerary for this trip includes the capital city, Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan. In Sandakan, I’ll be visiting the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and a Rainforest Research Centre. From here, I’ll head to Sukau, at the mouth of Sabah’s mightiest river, the Kinabatangan. My jungle adventure starts here and I hope to see lots of wildlife as we cruise down the river for two days.

If Velvet Escape loves it and the well-traveled Camels and Chocolate chose it for her honeymoon, it must be a must-see! Thanks for the geography lesson, for this Pacific Rim/SE Asia-challenged traveler.

I have done a fair bit of writing about my trip to Malaysia a few years back, but haven’t made it to Sabah yet. I am really curious.
