The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a contemporary arts museum in this city in the Basque Country, Spain. Designed by one of my favourite architects, Frank Gehry, the museum, with its undulating titanium façade, is a sight to behold. Built in the 1990’s as part of a programme to breathe new life into the decrepit port area of Bilbao (map) along the Nervion River, the building is widely hailed as one of the most important architectural masterpieces in modern history, and I wouldn’t disagree!

My first glimpse of the Guggenheim Museum. Loved the floral puppy by Jeff Koons that stands proudly at the entrance!

A must-visit in Bilbao!

A trip to the Guggenheim Museum is a MUST for anyone visiting Bilbao, if only to gape at its wave-like appearance. Surrounding the museum is the Bilbao Art District with some striking sculptures such as the ‘Puppy’ by Jeff Koons, the giant spider ‘Mamen’ by Louise Bourgeoie and ‘Tall Tree and the Eye’ by Anish Kapoo.

The museum houses a beautiful collection of paintings, sculptures and contemporary art installations. I’m pretty sure the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, one of the top museums in Spain, will inspire and amaze any visitor. For the best experience, I recommend joining a guided tour and/or visiting the museum in the early-morning or later in the afternoon. Check here for tour options to visit the museum.

The beautiful curves inside the museum.

A full view of the Guggenheim Museum with the world-famous spider in the foreground. Amazing isn’t it?

There are a lot more things to see in Bilbao. The highlights include the Casco Viejo (the historic Old Town with its delightful pintxos bars) and La Ribera market. In addition, don’t miss the imposing Bilbao Cathedral and the trendy La Vieja district. That said, the number one place to visit in Bilbao is definitely the Guggenheim Museum!
