Enchanting spots: Sydney Opera House

2009 September 16

Sydney Opera HouseThe Sydney Opera House is one of the most beautiful and unique buildings in the world (in my book). Designed by Jorn Utzon, a Danish architect, theĀ Opera House was built on a spit of land called Bennelong Point that juts into the breathtaking Sydney Harbour. Opened in 1973, the instantly recognisable clam-like structure has become an international icon. In 2007, the Opera House was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its ground-breaking design and for the fact that it is one of the most famous cultural and performing arts venues in the world.

The Opera House has a special place in my heart. I have many fond memories of sitting on the promenade, that runs around the building, as a child with my father, and watching the many cruise and container ships, ferries and sailboats whiz by. The views across the harbour to the equally impressive Sydney Harbour Bridge were unforgettable. My Dad and I would get a sandwich, sit on a bench and chat excitedly about the many boats and ships, and where they were all going. We would often return in the evenings to watch the thousands of twinkling lights in and around the harbour and admire the floodlit Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Simply magical.

These are special moments with my Dad I shall treasure forever.

The Sydney Opera House is indeed one of the most impressive unique buildings in the world. I will always remember the spectacular view one night from the ferry coming from Manly beach…the lights reflecting on the Opera House …it looked like a real living thing…”gleaming flower petals”….as you said Velvet, simply magical:)

When I came to Sydney for the first time, I went for sightseeing. The Opera House was one of the greatest attraction I have seen there, wit the Harbour Bridge near to it. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us .

I remember seeing the Sydney Opera House for the first. Couldn’t believe I was on the other side of the world, standing in front of a building I saw on TV several times. Had to pinch myself for believing that I was actually there! Thanks for sharing your memories with this post!

Thank you Rich & Amy for your lovely comments.
Meat pies or sandwiches, it is a very special place. Last year, I had caviar, oysters & swordfish at the Oyster House, just a few hundred yards from the Opera House. Awesome! :-)
