Venice, the bridge, airport & lagoon
On my flight from Amsterdam to Naples last summer, the plane flew over the Alps into Italy, past the lovely town of Bolzano (Bozen), then along the Adige valley (the home of the gorgeous Valpolicella wines) to Verona and past the stunning historical treasure that is Venice . It was a bit hazy but I managed to get some decent shots of the city, the islands and the Venetian lagoon.
Venice’s Marco Polo International Airport (top left in the first photo), the industrial areas and the port on the mainland, as well as the bridge that links Venice to the mainland, can clearly be seen in the first photo.

Venice and the Grand Canal
A gap in the haze gave me a better view of the city in the lagoon as we flew past. The S-shaped Grand Canal was unmistakable. Can you spot the whitish silhouette of San Marco Square in the second or third photos?

Thanks for your comment Sonya! I just love looking out from a plane window. You’re right, it always gives you a very good first impression of a place (when the weather is clear!
Cheers,
Keith
Beautiful post! I’m always intrigued by plane views when I fly into a new place. It’s actually your first glimpse, first introduction of a destination.
Love the dolphin shape island of Venice!!
Tnx! Been to Positano, so I’m going to check that one out:)
Hi,
I didn’t really take many pictures of Naples and I didn’t write an article on Naples itself but I did two articles on the Amalfi Coast, one of Pompeii, one on Mt. Vesuvius and one of the Blue Grotto in Capri:
- Positano
- Adolfo
- Pompeii
- Blue Grotto
- Mt. Vesuvius
Hope you like these articles.
Cheers,
Keith
Funny that you mentioned it. I was thinking the same.
Hope you will be posting the pictures you took in Naples too
did you ever notice how Venice has the shape of a fish?
Hi Mark,
Thanks for your comment. I’m hoping to go to Kota Kinabalu again soon. The snorkelling & diving opportunities there (in the state of Sabah) are awesome.
Cheers,
Keith
Great views. I really like the plane views from Kota Kinabalu (can’t wait to go there) and Bora Bora.
