The world’s tallest buildings

The new tallest building in the world, the Burj Dubai or Burj Khalifa, located in Dubai, will officially be opened today. Standing at more than 800 meters (half a mile tall!), it is twice the height of the Empire State Building in Manhattan and it dwarfs the world’s second tallest building, Taipei’s 101 Tower (at 509 meters). There’s something about skyscrapers that never ceases to fascinate me – I remember standing at the foot of the Twin Towers in New York in the 1980’s and looking up at that massive vertical surface. It was absolutely awe-inspiring. Whenever I’m in Kuala Lumpur, I always make it a point to visit the Petronas twin towers, once the world’s tallest buildings and now the world’s tallest twin towers. The sight of the two steel towers, shimmering in the sunlight, with their twin spires piercing the clouds, is simply spellbinding.

As a tribute to the magic of skyscrapers, here are the profiles of five of the tallest skyscrapers in the world. Enjoy!

Check out this awesome video of the view from the top of the spire of the Burj Dubai (824 meters high)! Warning: keep your eyes closed if you’re afraid of heights! 😉

    Hi Nico,
Thanks for your comment. Glad you like the article. Yes, I saw it too today that they’ve changed the name. Funny, eh… 🙂

    Cheers,

Very cool! I’m a fan of tall buildings too. Just the sheer spectacle of the undertaking is enough to captivate me. I like your photos because they give an idea of what it’s like to stand underneath these giants. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit the first 4!

By the way, it looks like they’re renaming the Burj Dubai, the Burj Khalifa as an homage to the president of the UAE for his role in rescuing Dubai from its financial meltdown. Nice one!

Thanks Megan! Wow, that must’ve been something, seeing the Shanghai World Financial Center from the Jin Mao tower. Awesome! The Petronas towers may no longer be the world’s tallest but they’re still absolutely breathtaking.

    Cheers,
    Keith

Fun idea for a post! I agree with you about the Petronas Towers – two of the most stunning buildings I’ve ever seen. Also, the Shanghai World Financial Center (known locally as the “Bottlecap Opener”) is quite something. It towered above us as we surveyed the city from the 88th floor of the Jinmao Tower, which was previously Shanghai’s highest building. Crazy!
