Preparation

check visa requirements. do i have to pre-arrange a visa or can i get
one upon arrival?
o check validity of passport. is it at least
six months valid?
o are vaccinations required? malaria tablets?
o money:
availability of ATM's, money changers at destination. are cc's widely
accepted?
o do i need an international driver's license?
o do i have travel insurance? does it cover
lost luggage and stolen items?
o leave a contact number for neighbours,
relatives or friends at home.
o check roaming possibilities of your cellphone.

| Packing
o
pack clothes/footwear for different activities and weather.
o a hat is always handy. do i need an umbrella/raincoat?
o sunblock and sunglasses.
o cellphone/camera/iPod/laptop chargers and
adapters.
o camera: extra battery packs and memory
sticks/tapes.
o bring your research (guide books, maps,
other info.) with you!
o a phrase book (for a country with a foreign
language)
o what should i NOT pack in my handluggage
(e.g. liquids, gels..)?
o alarm clock (if you don't have a phone
with you).
o earplugs can be handy.
o books to read or travel games/playing cards.
o a small torchlight can be handy.
o insect repellant (a necessity in the tropics).
o medication. always handy to bring some
aspirin & diarrhea pills.
o pack a few pens and a small notebook.
o your passport, (flight) tickets, booking
receipts & driver's license. |

your destination
o
if you need a taxi from the airport, ignore the touts and head for the
licensed operators.
o ask the locals (such as hotel personnel)
about street
safety and areas to avoid.
o if you're driving, observe local etiquette
on the road and drive accordingly.
o be mindful of local customs. show respect
and do not scoff.
o in a difficult situation, politeness and
a calm demeanour will get you far.
o take time to mingle with the locals and
ask questions.
o ENJOY (you've earned it) and leave only
your footprints behind!
