Houseboats in Amsterdam

dsc00364 One of the things I love about my hometown is the abundance of water – there’s the Amstel River, the Ij-harbour and the many, many miles of canals that crisscross the city centre. If the canals freeze in the winter, hordes of locals grab the opportunity to go ice-skating through the city’s splendid historic centre – an amazing experience (if you skate) and a gorgeous sight for the onlookers. A leisurely cruise around the canals during the warmer months is my favourite. The views of the 17th century houses, buildings and bridges from the water are absolutely stunning, especially in the evenings when the streets and bridges are lit. I don’t have a boat of my own but it’s easy to rent one and there’s always a friend with a boat who’s organising a party, a dinner or just drinks and canapés on the water. It’s always a magical experience.

For tourists, seeing the sights of Amsterdam from the water is a must. There are many types of canal cruises, or you could rent a boat or a canal-bike. Another option is renting a houseboat. Thousands of houseboats line the canals and the Amstel River. Most of them are homes (one of the Dutch princes has his home moored near the Amstel River) but some are rented out to visitors throughout the year. In the past few years, this form of accommodation has become increasingly popular. Staying on a houseboat instead of in a hotel provides guests with a unique insight into life along the canals or the river: a true Amsterdam experience. A recent article on MSNBC “A real Dutch treat – Holiday on a houseboat” is a great read for those wondering what it would be like.

    Hi Yoan,
There are many types of houseboats for rent in various price categories (EUR 100-250) but they’re usually big enough for 4 or more people. You could check out this site: http://houseboathotel.nl/ for more info and pictures. Some houseboat rental companies occasionally advertise on my velvetescape.com website. You could check out the Amsterdam page to see what’s available.
