Husky-sledding in Lapland

Husky safari in Finnish Lapland

The pristine snowy landscapes of Finnish Lapland spread out before me: empty fields covered by a thick blanket of virgin snow, gentle slopes with forests of towering fir trees and expansive frozen lakes. I stood upright on the sled, breathed the freshest air and allowed my eyes to feast on the enchanting scenery. The only sounds I heard were the panting of the huskies and the ‘whoosh’ of the sled as it glided through the snow. They say that it’s the moments that make travel special. This was one of those moments.

A husky safari in Finnish Lapland

My trip to Finnish Lapland was a series of sometimes quirky, often unique and especially unforgettable moments. I got to see the northern lights for the very first time, floated in an icy lake, sat in a sauna gondola and slept in an igloo! I thought of all those amazing experiences as the huskies pulled the sled through the snow and quickly decided that husky-sledding definitely belongs in that list of unforgettable moments.

Aren’t they gorgeous? :-)

Husky-sledding is a lot easier than I thought it would be. The crew at Ylläs Adventures (who organise all sorts of cool activities in Finnish Lapland like ice-floating and husky safaris) assured me that all I had to do was hold on tight, steer occasionally and use the brakes sparingly. They were right. After several minutes on the sled, my worries about not being able to steer the sled or even worse, getting bumped off the sled, diminished considerably. It’s that peace of mind that allowed me to truly enjoy the magnificent scenery and share the excitement of the (simply adorable) huskies.

It was a stunning safari that took us past icy fields and frozen lakes and through snow-clad forests. It was a cold day but I hardly noticed the chill – I guess the excitement and wonder I felt warmed me up sufficiently. After a while, I even gained the confidence to make a short single-handed video of this unforgettable experience.

If you’re visiting Finnish Lapland, I can definitely recommend the husky safari through the frozen Laplandic landscapes around Ylläs. The safari can easily be combined with a visit to the Snow Village in nearby Lainio. For more information, visit Ylläs Adventures.

Getting there: the closest airport to Ylläs is in Kittilä, about a 40-minute bus-ride away. There are scheduled flights from Helsinki as well as a variety of chartered services from various points in Europe to Kittilä.

Note: A big thank you goes to Visit Finland for your wonderful hospitality. As always, all views expressed above are mine.
