Whether you arrive in Cape Town by air, rail, road or sea, it’s the first thing you’ll notice: Table Mountain. This flat-topped mountain, at 1,085 meters high, is Cape Town’s most iconic and photographed landmark… and rightly so. Its presence can be felt all around the city and it also influences the city’s weather! My first sighting of the mountain was a memorable one. I was flying in from Amsterdam and as the plane approached the airport in the evening, I noticed a vaguely-lit mass below. It was night and the city lights shone bright around the mass but I strained my eyes to see what it was and realised that it was Table Mountain lit up with massive floodlights!

Table Mountain views

I’ve since been back to Cape Town (map) many times and the mountain never fails to impress. I’ll never tire of looking at this majestic mountain. I’ve been to the peak several times now, one of the top things to do in Cape Town, and I’ve seen the mountain from both the sea and the air.  As a tribute to this iconic mountain, I’ve compiled a series of photos to highlight just how awe-inspiring Table Mountain is. I hope you enjoy the views as much as I did!

Table Mountain views from the water

There are gorgeous views of the mountain from the V&A Waterfront. Alternatively, visit the historic Robben Island – the boat ride to the island offers stunning views from the bay – or go on a sunset cruise from the V&A Waterfront.

The Table Mountain Cableway is the easiest way to get to the peak. It whisks guests up to the peak within minutes. The mountain is also famed for its fynbos – a shrubby vegetation found in the Western Cape. Notice the flowering fynbos on the slopes.

Another great place to get a view of Table Mountain is from the beach at Camps Bay (at sunset).

Table Mountain views from the top

There are two ways to make it to the top – via the Cableway (or in combination with a city tour) or you can hike up the mountain (there are various paths with different levels of difficulty). If you’re not hiking up the mountain, go for a walk around the top to view the beautiful Cape fynbos vegetation. On the slopes, you’ll also find gorgeous proteas which are endemic to the mountain. Even if it’s sunny and warm, always take a warm coat with you as it can be quite chilly at the top. More importantly, enjoy the views… as they’re truly spectacular!
